ABOUT THIS POSITIONWe are seeking a Junior Data Engineer to join Waystar’s Business Data & Architecture team and support our data modernization journey on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).This is an entry-level role, ideal for a recent graduate (preferably Georgia Tech or similar program) with a strong foundation in data, software engineering, or analytics, and a passion for building scalable data solutions.You will work alongside senior engineers and architects to help build and maintain data pipelines, contribute to modern Medallion architecture (Bronze/Silver/Gold), and learn best practices in cloud data engineering, governance, and analytics delivery.WHAT YOU'LL DOWhat You’ll DoData Pipeline Development (Learn & Build)Assist in building and maintaining data pipelines into BigQuery using tools such as Fivetran and PythonSupport development of bronze, silver, and gold data layers for analytics use casesContribute to data transformations using dbt (training provided if needed)Work with senior engineers to understand orchestration and scheduling conceptsData Quality & ReliabilityHelp implement basic data validation and data quality checksSupport monitoring of pipelines and troubleshooting data issuesLearn best practices for logging, testing, and error handlingPlatform & Engineering PracticesContribute to version-controlled development using GitHubAssist in documenting data pipelines, transformations, and data modelsLearn CI/CD and Infrastructure-as-Code concepts (Terraform exposure)Governance & CollaborationPartner with data engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to understand data requirementsSupport data classification, lineage, and governance initiativesParticipate in Data Champions and domain-based data ownership practicesWhat You’ll BringRequired QualificationsBachelor’s degree in computer science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or related fieldStrong academic foundation in:SQLPython or similar programming languageData structures and problem-solvingInternship, coursework, or project experience in data engineering, analytics, or cloud platformsWillingness to learn modern data tools and cloud technologiesStrong communication and collaboration skillsPreferred QualificationsExposure to cloud platforms such as GCP, AWS, or AzureFamiliarity with:BigQuery or relational databasesdbt or data transformation toolsAPIs and data ingestion conceptsExperience with Git or version controlAcademic or personal projects involving data pipelines or analyticsWHAT YOU'LL NEEDBuilding scalable data pipelines in a modern cloud platform (GCP / BigQuery)Data modeling and Medallion architecture designdbt-based transformation and analytics engineeringData quality frameworks and observabilityData governance, classification, and secure access controlsReal-world enterprise data platform deliverySQLPython (or similar language)Basic data modeling / analytics conceptsGit or version control (exposure)ABOUT WAYSTARThrough a smart platform and better experience, Waystar helps providers simplify healthcare payments and yield powerful results throughout the complete revenue cycle.Waystar’s healthcare payments platform combines innovative, cloud-based technology, robust data, and unparalleled client support to streamline workflows and improve financials so providers can focus on what matters most: their patients and communities.
