Officer Security Forces Officer

Security is the first line of defense for every Air Force mission. Security Forces Officers lead the teams responsible for protecting Airmen, installations and strategic resources across the globe. Leveraging expertise in weapons systems, antiterrorism, law enforcement, Air Base Ground Defense, industrial security and Combat Arms, they command operations that secure the ground around our bases and defend the people, equipment and missions that keep America safe.

Officers lead Airmen responsible for protecting people, installations and critical resources while overseeing law enforcement operations and security programs. Through strategic planning, crisis response and the management of personnel and equipment, you play a direct role in safeguarding Air Force missions while building a career defined by growth, responsibility and leadership.

Key things to consider requirements

    • Bachelor's degree with specialization in one of the following: sociology, criminology, police administration, criminal justice or a related area
    • A passing score on the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT)
    • Knowledge of Air Force Security Forces programs and related security
    • Additional requirements specific to specialty
    • Meet requirements of the Personnel Reliability Program (PRP)
    • Normal color vision
    • Qualification to bear firearms
    • Possession of a valid state driver's license to operate a government motor vehicle
    • Completion of Officer Training School (OTS), Air Force Academy (AFA) or Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC)
    • Must be between the ages of 18 and have not reached your 42nd birthday

  • Security Forces Officers serve in leadership and management roles, directing operations and supervising Airmen. Enlisted Security Forces personnel perform day-to-day law enforcement and base defense duties, while officers focus on planning, oversight and strategic execution.
  • Security Forces Airmen can be assigned to Air Force bases across the United States and around the world. Assignments may include large installations, overseas bases and deployed locations in support of global operations.
  • To become a Security Forces Officer, you must earn a four-year college degree and complete a commissioning source such as Officer Training School, Air Force ROTC or the U.S. Air Force Academy. After commissioning, you will attend specialized training to prepare you to lead Security Forces Airmen and oversee installation security operations.
  • Security Forces Officers may deploy in support of Air Force missions worldwide. While many assignments focus on installation security and leadership, officers can operate in high-threat or austere environments depending on mission requirements.
  • After commissioning, officers complete initial officer training followed by specialized Security Forces training focused on leadership, law enforcement oversight, resource management and force protection. Training prepares officers to lead teams in both peacetime and contingency operations.
  • Security Forces Officers wear standard Air Force uniforms, including the Operational Camouflage Pattern uniform for daily duties. Depending on assignment and mission needs, they may also wear tactical gear during exercises, field operations or deployments.
