SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Special Education Paraprofessional - Extended School Year (ESY) provides direct support to students with disabilities during the district's summer ESY program. Working under the supervision of a licensed special education teacher, the paraprofessional assists with implementing IEP goals, providing personal care, managing student behavior, and supporting meaningful participation in learning activities. This role spans multiple program sites and requires flexibility, patience, and a strong commitment to student well-being in a fast-paced summer environment.

ESY PROGRAM DETAILS

Session Dates: Monday-Thursday, July 6-9, July 13-16, and July 20-23

Program Hours: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

ECSE Program Hours: 9:00 AM - 11:30 PM

ECSE: CELC Building

Grades K-5: Peter Hobart Elementary School

Grades 6-12: St. Louis Park Middle School

T-Plus Program: Lenox Community Center

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support and monitor students with disabilities in ESY program settings across assigned grade band and location.
  • Assist in implementing individualized education program (IEP) goals and objectives under the direction of the supervising special education teacher.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group instructional support in academic, communication, social, and functional skill areas.
  • Collect objective observational data, assist with progress monitoring, and prepare and organize instructional materials as directed.
  • Assist with personal care needs of individual students, including feeding, toileting, positioning, and mobility support as needed.
  • Implement positive behavior support strategies and behavior intervention plans (BIPs) as designed by special education staff.
  • Support student transitions within and between program settings, ensuring safety and well-being throughout the program day.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to diversity in cultural heritage, lifestyles, and value systems among students and families.
  • Assist with adapting instructional materials and activities to meet the unique needs of individual students.
  • Collaborate with special education teachers, related service providers, and other ESY staff to coordinate student support.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records consistent with district policies and FERPA requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher or building principal specific to special education.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Basic principles and practices of special education, including IEPs, individualized instruction, and disability categories.
  • Different types of disabilities and their impact on learning and behavior.
  • Behavioral management strategies and positive reinforcement techniques for students with mild to severe disabilities.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and implement established educational plans accurately.
  • Skill in using adaptive technology, augmentative communication devices, and modified materials to support student participation.
  • Communicating clearly and effectively with students, families, teachers, and support staff.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (50 lbs.) and provide physical assistance to students as needed.
  • Must employ interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Recording and reporting observations of student progress and behavior in an organized and confidential manner.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and advocating for student access to educational opportunities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Standing and Walking: Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods while assisting students in the classroom, during activities, and on school grounds.
  • Mobility: Ability to move quickly and assist students during transitions, emergency situations, or when providing support throughout the school.
  • Lifting and Carrying: May need to lift or assist in lifting students, carry or move equipment, materials, or assist with mobility needs (up to 50 pounds).
  • Bending and Reaching: Required to bend, kneel, or reach to assist students with daily activities, adapt materials, or address needs.
  • Physical Assistance: May need to provide hands-on assistance with personal care tasks, such as feeding, toileting, or positioning students with mobility impairments.
  • Stamina: Ability to maintain energy and focus throughout the program session, including managing students during transitions and activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Classroom Setting: Primarily work in specialized or program-based classroom settings across multiple ESY sites supporting students with diverse needs.
  • Community-Based Setting: The T-Plus program is located at Lenox Community Center, requiring flexibility in a non-school environment.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work closely with special education teachers, related service providers, and other ESY staff to implement individualized plans and support students' needs.
  • Varied Student Needs: Interact with students who may have a wide range of disabilities, including physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral challenges.
  • Dynamic and Flexible: The pace can vary depending on student needs across sites, requiring adaptability and quick responses.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • 60 college semester credits from an accredited institution
  • Highly Qualified status through a passing score on the ParaEducator or ParaPro exam
Candidates who do not meet one of the above qualifications will be required to pass the ParaEducator exam within 30 days of hire.
  • Previous experience working with students with disabilities in an educational setting strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work with students with mild to severe disabilities.
  • Experience with behavior support, personal care, or assistive technology is a plus.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • No specific licensure required; must meet ESEA paraprofessional qualification standards as noted above.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training will be provided by the district.
  • First aid and CPR certification preferred
