Job Description

About the Opportunity

We are looking for an Associate Executive Director to support a small, growing nonprofit with a national platform and a mission focused on mental health, equity, and community care for underrepresented communities.

This is a focused-scope senior leadership role designed for an experienced nonprofit professional who can operate as a strategic partner to the Executive Director while working within a part-time schedule. The role is intentionally structured at 20 to 30 hours per week so the right person can make a meaningful impact without taking on a full-time executive workload.

This position may be hybrid for Maryland, D.C. and Virgina based candidates, with remote arrangements considered for the right fit.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as a senior strategic partner and second-in-command to the Executive Director
  • Represent the organization in high-visibility settings when needed, including with board members, funders, national partners, and external stakeholders
  • Support executive-level planning, decision-making, board preparation, and organizational priorities
  • Provide oversight for the existing grants portfolio, grant-related staff, consultants, and reporting cadence
  • Help steward current funder relationships in partnership with the Executive Director
  • Recommend improvements to grants calendars, reporting processes, compliance tracking, and internal workflows
  • Provide oversight and coordination across program areas without taking over direct program management
  • Hold regular check-ins with program managers to review priorities, blockers, progress, and support needs
  • Help ensure core systems, including CRM and internal platforms, are being used effectively across the organization
  • Serve as a thought partner on operations, programs, organizational structure, and leadership priorities
  • Prepare written recommendations for operational, programmatic, and organizational improvements
  • Help create accountability, clarity, and alignment across a small but growing team
  • Support senior-level communication with discretion, professionalism, and strong judgment

Focused Scope of the Role

This role is intentionally designed as a focused part-time leadership position. The Associate Executive Director will provide senior-level oversight, strategic partnership, funder stewardship support, and program coordination within a defined scope.

At this stage, the role is not designed to carry full-time executive responsibility, full ownership of new revenue development, or hands-on implementation of every operational improvement. Scope may expand over time as the organization grows.

Scope of Responsibilities

  • Net-new grant prospecting or new institutional funder development
  • Full ownership of business development or revenue generation
  • Hands-on implementation of organizational transformation initiatives
  • Direct ownership of program content or day-to-day program management
  • Primary board strategy leadership, which remains with the Executive Director

What We're Looking For

  • 8 or more years of nonprofit leadership experience with progressive responsibility
  • Experience with grants management, grants oversight, and funder stewardship
  • Grant writing experience helpful, but not required
  • Experience overseeing nonprofit operations, programs, or cross-functional team priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to represent an organization in public, partner-facing, funder-facing, or high-profile settings
  • Demonstrated commitment to mental health, mental wellness, health equity, cultural equity, or community care
  • Comfort working with high-profile stakeholders, public figures, board members, funders, and national partners
  • Strong judgment, discretion, maturity, and ability to operate within a defined scope
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience
  • Ability to work effectively in a part-time senior leadership capacity

Preferred Background

  • Master's degree in nonprofit management, public health, social work, business, or a related field
  • Experience with serving underrepresented communities
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or a similar CRM platform
  • Interest in growing with the organization as leadership needs expand
  • Experience supporting a founder-led, high-visibility, or mission-driven nonprofit organization

Compensation & Schedule

  • Schedule of 20 to 30 hours per week
  • Hybrid arrangement preferred for Maryland-based candidates
  • Remote arrangement within Maryland, D.C. and Virginia
  • Initial 90-day period with defined goals and a formal review

Why This Role Stands Out

This is a strong opportunity for a senior nonprofit leader who wants to contribute at a strategic level while working within a defined, part-time scope. The role offers the opportunity to support a mission-driven organization with a national platform, meaningful community impact, existing grant activity, and room for future growth.

Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.
